Overview
What is the Geyserwala Connect?
It is a smart WiFi retrofit for selected geyser controllers which enables remote control. It can be installed on selected existing systems and with new systems.
What is Thingwala's affiliation with Geyserwise?
The Geyserwala Connect has been developed independently by Thingwala. It is designed for compatibility with selected third-party geyser controller systems.
Geyserwise refers to the name of the controller system for which compatibility information is provided. References to this name are made only for identification and compatibility purposes. Thingwala (Pty) Ltd is not affiliated with or endorsed by its owner.
I'm not into tech, is the Geyserwala Connect for me?
Certainly. All you need is WiFi. This will allow you to control your geyser system, change modes, set timers, and boost the temperature from your phone, from anywhere. Any friend who is handy with a screwdriver can do the installation for you in a few minutes.
It is great for anyone who wants to know the water temperature and remote control their geyser. Even your parents, to stop from switching the geyser on and off from that scary distribution board.
I want a Geyserwala Connect, but don't have a geyser controller?
You will need a compatible third-party geyser controller installed (for example, models such as Geyserwise Delta-T, Max, TSE1). These products are available through the manufacturer's distributor and installer networks. Decide whether you want a basic timer, a solar collector system, or a PV-based system to pair with your Geyserwala Connect.
Which geyser systems does the Geyserwala Connect work with?
The Geyserwala Connect has been tested for compatibility with selected third-party controllers, including the Geyserwise Delta-T, Dual, Max, TSE1 and the legacy TSE models (2 and 3 digit display).
Other Geyserwise systems marked with "Satchwell", "Franke", "TS" or "MWS" are not compatible.
The make and model name of your existing geyser system is typically written on the display panel.
How compatible is Geyserwala Connect?
Very. The Geyserwala Connect has endured many months of continuous testing without issue.
Additionally, we carried out internal behavioural and interoperability evaluations with the Geyserwala Connect. Our analysis confirmed that the behaviour and operation of the systems tested were unaffected by the installation of a Geyserwala Connect.
What warranty do I get from Thingwala?
If you experience an issue, please see Product Support for assistance. If a product is found to be defective within six months of delivery, we will do what we can to resolve your issue.
How does this affect the warranty on my existing geyser system?
Please refer to your product manual for further details.
The Geyserwala Connect should be considered to be an aftermarket retrofit. Installing a third-party aftermarket retrofit may affect the original manufacturer's warranty; please consult their warranty terms.
How does the Geyserwala Connect compare with other smart WiFi retrofits?
We're very proud of the Geyserwala Connect so we'd love to toot our horn about our product. But that would not be fair to you as a discerning customer.
We believe that there are many reasons that you would prefer the Geyserwala Connect. It is not just a WiFi retrofit, it is very much more. From the ease of use, improved control and visibility, to the interactive display, and the open integration principles of the design.
There is a lot of detail about the benefits of the Geyserwala Connect on our website. You can experience the app here. Additionally you can look up more info on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn. Here is what customers are saying to us. And of course feel free to do your internet research.
Where is the app on the App Store?
The Geyserwala Connect app is built using Progressive Web App (PWA) technology. This means you can use it on any internet-connected phone, tablet, or laptop while enjoying a native-like experience.
The app is installed directly from our console, there is no need to download it from an app store. It is always up to date, uses minimal space on your device, and is easy to share with others. And it can be installed just the same as any other app. From the console, you can generate multiple apps and choose which devices appear in each app.

Operation
How does Boost work?
When you switch on Boost, the water will heat until it reaches the Setpoint temperature (or for a maximum of 2 hours) and then it will switch off. Boost will only work in Timer, Solar or Standby mode and when the Setpoint is higher than the tank temperature.
Can I set the max temperature above 65°C?
Yes. The default range is 30 to 65 °C. In the settings you can change the maximum to be anywhere from 30 to 75 °C.
However please take care, 75°C water can scald human skin, and also be sure it is within the specifications of your plumbing.
Will solar heating work when in Timer mode?
Yes. If your geyser system has a solar component (either the solar collector or the photo-voltaic panel) whenever there is sufficient energy available from the sun the water will be heated.
When in Timer mode the water will additionally be heated by the element to the desired temperature.
My system shows Standby mode, not Solar mode?
During installation your Geyserwala Connect has been configured such that there is no solar heating component. If you do have solar then see the manual for Model Selection.
The Collector line is not showing on the Timeline?
During installation your Geyserwala Connect has been configured such that there is no solar collector. If you do have a solar collector with a pump, then see the manual for Model Selection
I don't have WiFi, can I still use my Geyserwala Connect?
Yes, both for temporary or permanent situations where you do not have WiFi it is possible to use the Geyserwala, for details see: Offline Mode.
Installation
How is the Geyserwala Connect installed?
It replaces the printed circuit board in the display panel of compatible geyser controller systems.
Installation only takes a few minutes and does not require a plumber or an electrician. You only need a star screwdriver.
Can I install my Geyserwala Connect on a different system?
If the new system is compatible with your Geyserwala Connect, simply perform a Factory Reset and then follow the installation instructions.
Can I integrate my Geyserwala Connect with proprietary apps?
Thingwala has specifically designed the Geyserwala Connect to support open integration standards and to work without vendor-hosted servers. This gives the user full control and ownership of the device, and the freedom to use it however they choose. For local access it provides a lightweight Progressive Web App that works seamlessly on any phone, tablet, or laptop. This app is optionally available via the Thingwala servers for free to make remote access convenient. However, the Geyserwala Connect can just as easily be controlled by any other open home automation platform.
Home automation platforms provided by Tuya/Sonoff/etc such as SmartLife/eWeLink/etc are intentionally closed to third-party devices. While this strengthens the vendor's market position, it restricts which devices you can use, how you can use them, and blocks cross-platform interoperability. Users often end up juggling multiple apps that cannot work together.
Thus Thingwala neither neither pursues nor is permitted to integrate with these closed ecosystems.
How do I copy settings from my old device?
The settings of your original display panel can be read out according to the manufacturer's manual.
Geyserwise
On the Geyserwise controller it is basically a process of repeatedly pressing the SET button and recording the values you see.
The sequence of values you will see is as follows:
| Value | Comment |
|---|---|
| Temp Block 1 | Maximum setpoint from 00h00 to 06h00 |
| Temp Block 2 | Maximum setpoint from 06h00 to 12h00 |
| Temp Block 3 | Maximum setpoint from 12h00 to 18h00 |
| Temp Block 4 | Maximum setpoint from 18h00 to 00h00 |
| DC Max Temp | * TSE1, Dual models only |
| LDR Reading | * Dual models only |
| Differential | * Delta T, Max models only |
| Antifreeze | * Delta T, Max models only |
| Time: Day of Week, Hour, Minute | Set the real-time clock |
| Timer MON-FRI 1 to 4: Hour, Minute - ON and OFF | The start and end times for each of the four Monday to Friday timers. The temperature follows the blocks above. |
| Timer SAT-SUN 1 to 4: Hour, Minute - ON and OFF | The start and end times for each of the four Saturday and Sunday timers. The temperature follows the blocks above. |
The Geyserwala Connect does not have temperature blocks, each timer can have its own temperature. Timers are conveniently set on the Timers Page or via the System Screen. If your geyser controller model has them, the DC Max Temp, LDR Reading, Differential, and Antifreeze settings they can be adjusted on the Settings Page or the System Screen. There is no need to set the time on the Geyserwala Connect, it gets its time from the internet and is always correct.
How do I link multiple Geyserwala devices to the same app?
To control multiple devices from one app:
- Link each device individually to your Thingwala Console account.
- In the Console, create or edit an app, and choose which devices to include.
- When the app loads, tap the title bar to switch between devices.
Setup
How do I install the App on my phone?
When you first open the app link you got from the Thingwala Console you should see a menu option to "Install App", this will add an app icon to your phone.
If the menu option does not show try opening the link directly with your web browser, rather than for example via a messenger app. Then look for the "Add to Home Screen" or "Install App" option on your web browser, the location varies so you may need to look up "How to install a Progressive Web App on my phone".
How do I setup multiple devices?
Install each device following the usual setup instructions. Once you have linked the device and it is showing in the Devices list on the Thingwala Console. Then edit an existing app and add the device, or create a new app and add the new the device.
To switch between multiple devices on the app just tap the title bar.
I'm seeing a blinking WiFi icon?
During installation it is possible to encounter a status message of "Network down", "WiFi not available" or "WiFi disconnected", with a blinking WiFi icon. This means that the Geyserwala Connect is unable to make a WiFi connection with the given credentials and location. The WiFi setup is covered in the installation video and the manual.
In the majority of cases this issue usually arises because the WiFi name and/or password was not entered exactly as they are. Go back into Config Mode and carefully re-enter your WiFi name and password, with the correct uppercase, lowercase, spaces and special characters.
Actually retype both of them; "Rob's WiFi" is not "Robs WiFi", and also not "Rob's Wifi". If your WiFi name ends with something like "[2GHz]" then you must include those characters too. Tap the eye icon to verify that your password has been typed in as you expect.
- "WiFi not available": usually indicates that the Geyserwala Connect cannot see a WiFi network of that name, in the 2.4GHz band. Also make sure that there is not a space character at the end.
- "WiFi disconnected": usually indicates that the password was not accepted.
- "Network down": indicates a broader set of issues that the Geyserwala Connect is unable to connect, including that the WiFi access point may be prohibiting the connection in some way.
If you have entered the credentials correctly the WiFi will quickly connect when the POWER button is pressed.
The Geyserwala Connect performs well even with a weak WiFi signal, however typically if your phone cannot connect to the WiFi at that location, then you will need to make alternative arrangements to provide your Geyserwala Connect with a stronger WiFi signal.
Also, as is the case for most IoT devices, the Geyserwala Connect can only use 2.4GHz WiFi networks. There is no need to make any adjustments to any 5GHz networks you may have, but you will need a 2.4GHz network.
This issue is almost always caused by mistyped credentials, so please double-check carefully. And if you still cannot resolve this issue please see Product Support for assistance.
I cannot setup the Cloud Link?
Linking your Geyserwala Connect to the Thingwala cloud servers is straightforward:
- Obtain a Cloud Token from the Thingwala Console.
- Enter the token into the Geyserwala you want to link.
- The Geyserwala uses this token to contact the Thingwala cloud servers.
- Once verified, it becomes one of your registered devices.
Ensure you enter the full token, which looks like: 0ef91304-a6ec-4778-b0d1-dca63fa7afc4 (37 characters).
When you set the Cloud Token field, the Geyserwala will attempt to link with the cloud servers. This usually takes about a minute but can occasionally fail:
- If the token is invalid, the field will be cleared automatically.
- If the token is valid but linking fails, the field will remain set but the status will show Unlinked.
- In this case, the Geyserwala waits 3 to 5 minutes before retrying.
If linking has not succeeded after 30 minutes, there may be a network issue preventing the device from reaching the internet. Check whether any network restrictions are in place.
As a workaround, you can temporarily connect the Geyserwala to the internet via a mobile phone WiFi hotspot. Restart the Geyserwala (via the SYSTEM screen on the display or the System page in the Local app) to trigger an immediate retry. Once linked, the device will restart and show Linked below the Cloud Token field. You can then reconnect it to your home WiFi.
Once linked, the Geyserwala will display Cloud link down whenever the cloud connection is not established. Normally, the link should reconnect quickly. If the connection works via a mobile phone WiFi hotspot but not on your home WiFi, this strongly suggests a network issue is preventing the device from reaching the internet.
During normal operation, occasional brief drops in the cloud link can occur due to internet variability. These should be infrequent and short-lived. When this happens, the Geyserwala will show Cloud link down and the Web App will display Device Offline.
The app works intermittently?
The Local app, which is the link you got directly from the Geyserwala Connect display, by pressing the DOWN button for 3 seconds, is only available from your home network. The URL looks like http:// and then numbers and dots. The way the internet works it is not possible to access your Geyserwala Connect using the Local app from other locations unless you have specifically set up a Virtual Private Network or similar system to access your home network when you are somewhere else.
Using the Web app the Geyserwala Connect can be controlled from anywhere. Web App Setup in the installation guide provides the details of how to do this. The URL for your Web App will look like https://app.thingwala.com/geyserwala/ followed by lots of numbers and letters.
Why don't you just do it like a "normal" smart device app? you may ask. We have built the Geyserwala Connect so that it can be installed in a Cloud-Free setup, where all communication stays inside the home network and the operation and lifetime of the device is not dependent on the manufacturer.
I'm seeing a blank or frozen display or "Power Supply Unstable"?
Although the Geyserwala Connect uses less power than the original PCB, the addition of WiFi introduces a brief power surge during startup, which can cause issues in some installations.
This typically affects older geyser controller systems where the power supply is weaker, the display cable is too long, or the connectors have corroded over time.
To resolve this, check that all connectors between the Geyserwala Connect and the control box are clean and make solid contact. Unplug and replug each connector, and preferably use electrical contact cleaner. Ensure the display cable length does not exceed the manufacturer's recommendation. If possible, shorten the cable or relocate the display closer to the control box.
If the issue persists or you're unable to inspect the cable, please see Product Support for assistance. Let us know what you've tried, which geyser system and model you have, how old it is, and anything else about your installation that may be different.
I'm seeing "E7 Comms failure"?
During installation the correct Model must be selected to ensure compatibility, see Model Selection in the manual.
If you are seeing this error at other times, refer to the manufacturer's manual for further troubleshooting.
I'm seeing "Time service down"?
During installation after you have setup the WiFi, if the status message persistently says "Time service down". Then there is some sort of network misconfiguration that is preventing the Geyserwala Connect from connecting out to the internet time servers.
This could be a misconfiguration of the Geyserwala Connect. It is best to use the default settings. Setting the static IP is disadvised, relying on DHCP is preferred.
Or it could be a misconfiguration of your network. Is the DNS resolving? Is the Geyserwala Connect connected to a network that has internet access? Will your firewall allow it to open connections?
If you wish to block the Geyserwala Connect from accessing the internet you will need to supply your own NTP server.
Fault Finding
- E4
- If youâre confident that this fault report is a false alarm due to the specifics of your installation, the Geyserwala Connect can be configured to ignore this fault code, see Options.
- E7
- If you encounter this fault report during installation then see I'm seeing "E7 Comms failure"?, refer to the manual of your specific model.
- E8
- If you're confident that this fault report is a false alarm due to the specifics of your installation, the Geyserwala Connect can be configured to ignore this fault code, see Options.
- Internet
- The internet isn't perfect and sometimes connections drop, but are usually infrequent and quickly restored.
- ISP
- The quality of service of Internet Service providers can vary, and even if you have a really fast fibre line, at times the connectivity you get from your ISP can be really bad or broken.
- Your Router
- Not all networking equipment is made equal, typically consumer grade devices crash and reset from time to time.
- WiFi Access Point
- Often the WiFi AP is included as part of the router, but can come as a separate device too. The AP is a radio device, for good communication the signal at the Geyserwala Connect needs to be sufficiently strong and without interference from other sources. Check the RSSI on the Geyserwala Info screen, preferably it should be above -70dBm. Check that the WiFi channel your AP is using does not conflict with other nearby APs by installing a WiFi scanner app on your phone. The Geyserwala Connect only uses 2.4GHz, so the 5GHz performance and configuration is irrelevant. Consider if there are other sources of electromagnetic interference?
- Power
- The Geyserwala Connect receives power through a cable from your geyser system, so it will be off if there is no power to your geyser. Check the device Uptime on the Info screen. We have seen instances where the power to the geyser is intermittent.
- Download the new firmware file by clicking this [firmware download link].

→ click Select Firmware File,
→ Select the file you downloaded above. - Wait for the upload to fully complete.
- Scroll down to "Restart",
→ click Restart Now, and then click Yes.
I installed the Geyserwala Connect and now I'm seeing issues?
After installing the Geyserwala Connect there is a good chance that you start to notice things about your system that you've not seen before. If it is something bad, please don't shoot the messenger. One of the benefits of the Geyserwala Connect is to provide you more visibility of your system.
The original geyser system control box remains in place, and much of its behaviour is unchanged by the addition of the Geyserwala Connect. In many cases referring to the original system manual or consulting its authorised service providers will help resolve the issue.
The collector temperature is -25°C?
The collector temperature probe is only used on systems that have a solar collector with a pump. It allows your geyser controller to detect when the collector is hotter than the tank so that it can run the pump. It can be confusing because there are also solar thermosyphon systems, which look similar but there is no pump, and solar photovoltaic systems both of which do not use a collector temperature probe.
In most cases when you see -25°C during setup, it means that your Geyserwala Connect is not correctly configured. See Model Selection in the manual to configure your device correctly.
If you actually do have a solar collector with a pump and you are still seeing -25°C then it indicates that there is a fault with your probe. Without a signal from the collector probe, solar heating will not take place. To repair this you will need to contact the original system's service provider.
The status is showing an error code: E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, E6, E7, E8, E9?
These error codes are the geyser controller system fault reports, for further troubleshooting refer to the manual of your specific model.
Here are some additional notes:
The timers are not kicking in?
Check that the Geyserwala Connect is showing TIMER mode. Check that the timer in question is marked as ACTIVE, and the required days of the week are selected.
Check that the Geyserwala Connect is showing the current time on the display at the top right. If not, try restarting on the System screen on the display panel (or the System page in the Local App).
If this happens frequently you may need to use alternate NTP settings.
If your Geyserwala Connect has a Real-Time Clock module fitted (optional) ensure that the time is correct, if not, set it from the System screen on the display panel.
The tank temperature showed 25°C, but when I showered the water was balmy?
See below.
When I draw water the tank temperature drops rapidly, what's going on?
There are a few different places that installers tend to place the tank temperature sensor. This effect is commonly seen on systems where the tank temperature sensor has been located near to the cold water inlet. So the moment you draw hot water you will see the tank temperature drop to close to the incoming cold water. There is usually plenty more hot water left in the tank, but unfortunately with this sensor placement it can't be seen.
The element is not switching on?
A water heating controller typically uses a small temperature margin, or hysteresis, to prevent rapid on-off cycling once the target temperature is reached. This reduces wear on both the control relay and the heating element, extending their service life.
The Geyserwala Connect applies this principle with a 6 ℃ hysteresis and a minimum three-hour holdoff after switching off, unless the tank temperature drops by more than 6 ℃.
Using the Boost button will break through this holdoff and differential to give you an instant response.
I sometimes cannot connect to the Local app, what is going on?
The first thing to check is that your phone is connected to your home WiFi. The Local app can only be accessed from your local home network.
This is often resolved by ensuring you are currently connected to your WiFi, and there is sufficient signal strength, and then retrying a few times. Modern phones tend to seamlessly switch between your WiFi and mobile data, but your Local app is only available via your WiFi.
The IP address of the Local app may also have changed, see the FAQ below for more details.
The Local app is intended for specialist users, who have sophisticated network setups. For normal app like remote control from anywhere you can setup a Web App.
The IP address of my Geyserwala Connect keeps changing, what can I do?
In home networks it is possible that the IP address of devices can change, typically after your router has been power cycled. See Connect to Local App for possible solutions.
An easier option is to setup a Web App, which will work from anywhere, so long as both you and the Geyserwala Connect can connect to the internet.
How do I reset the Local App password?
Activate the Config Mode, connect and set a new password on the Settings page.
The password can be cleared by performing a factory reset, but then you will have to reconfigure the device.
The App does not work on my old phone?
We have tested against a range of older phones to ensure the best compatibility we can. With the large number of different devices available it is unfortunately not feasible to test against all makes, models, operating system and browser versions.
If the app looks strange or does not work in some way for you, first check that your operating system and browser version is up to date. Try an alternative web browser, we have primarily focused on Google Chrome and Apple Safari. If this is not successful then please see Product Support and let us know about the issue, the specific make, model, operating system version of your phone and the web browser version, so that we can try to make it work for you too.
The Time is 2 Hours Behind?
The Geyserwala Connect obtains its time from Network Time Protocol (NTP) servers on the internet, which operate according to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Previously Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Additionally, there are standard ways to represent time in regular and unambiguous ways such as ISO8601.
The time shown on the System and Settings page in the Local app is in the ISO8601 standard, and for UTC. The "Z" added directly after the time indicates this. You may have heard commercial aircraft pilots talking about "Zulu" time, it is the same thing.
South African Standard Time (UTC+2) is two hours ahead of UTC. Therefore, the "UTC Offset" on the Settings page is by default set to 2. In this way the time shown on the display panel and used by your timers will operate with normal South African time and with internet accuracy.
The display is dead?
The most likely cause is that there is no power to your geyser system, or no power on the display cable to the Geyserwala Connect. Apart from load shedding, a power outage could be caused by other electrical issues, such as an electrical wiring fault or even a misbehaving ripple relay. Check your distribution board to see if the geyser circuit is on. The display cable to the Geyserwala Connect may have become disconnected or damaged.
If there are no signs of life on the Geyserwala Connect, a quick test that you can perform is to press and hold the POWER button for more than 10 seconds. The red LED light should start to show continuously, until you release the button. There will be a brief pause and then the red LED will blink twice when the Geyserwala Connect restarts. If this does not happen there is a very good chance there is a power issue.

The Web App shows Offline?
To control your Geyserwala Connect using the Web App it is necessary to link the device to the cloud. Once this is done the Geyserwala Connect will attempt to establish and maintain a TCP/IP connection to the Thingwala servers. If for some reason the connection drops, the Geyserwala Connect will periodically attempt to reestablish this link. While the connection is down the Web App will show the status as Offline.
There are many possible reasons why a TCP/IP connection will drop, here follow some things you may want to consider:
Technical
Is the device completely local?
Yes. You can run the Geyserwala Connect in a completely isolated network. The Local app, and the MQTT and REST APIs are all local.
The optional remote Web app naturally makes use of the cloud.
The device will connect out on NTP. It will periodically check for firmware updates. And it will report usage metrics. You can configure your own NTP and the others can be disabled.
Does it have a real time clock?
No. Most IoT devices do not have a real-time clock, they get their time from the internet (see: Network Time Protocol). It is a lot better because it is always accurate, often to atomic time, and you never need to set it, correct it or change the batteries.
If you wanted to run a Geyserwala Connect on a completely isolated network, then providing your own NTP is something you'd expect to do anyway.
Does the Geyserwala Connect give me full remote control over all settings and measurements?
Yes. All operational control and data is available via the JSON REST API, and most of the interesting stuff via the MQTT API.
From the Web app you have control of the everyday usage such as changing modes, setting timers, and boosting, just like in the demo app.
From the Local app you get the above, plus other operational settings and metrics.
If my internet goes down will it continue to work?
The Geyserwala Connect will continue to operate as normal if there is an interruption in your internet. However, because the Geyserwala Connect cannot communicate with the cloud, you will not be able to use the Web app, and it will show that your device is offline.
One possible issue that may occur is if for some reason the Geyserwala Connect is restarted at this time, then it will not be able to get the time from the internet. In this case the timers will not work, until the internet is restored.
You will still be able to control your Geyserwala Connect via the Local app.
If my WiFi goes down will it continue to work?
The Geyserwala Connect will continue to operate as normal if there is an interruption in your WiFi. However, because the Geyserwala Connect has no connectivity neither the Web or Local app will work.
You will still be able to control your Geyserwala Connect via the display panel, and it will reconnect once your WiFi is restored.
How do I find the IP address of my Geyserwala Connect?
The Local App screen displays the IP.
How are firmware updates made available?
The Geyserwala Connect, by default, will automatically periodically check for a new version of firmware, download and install it.
If the automatic updates are disabled it is still possible to manually check for a new version and install, via the Local app.
If the Geyserwala Connect has no internet connection at all it is possible to manually upload the latest version.
Can I contribute to the Geyserwala Connect product?
Certainly. We are very keen to make the Geyserwala Connect a product that works for you. Feel free to contribute directly to our open source integration projects on GitHub, and even suggest new ones. For feature requests or issues with Geyserwala Connect please use the Geyserwala Connect - GitHub page.
Quality
Why is the display so small?
Most smart home devices do not have a display, and are purely accessed via an app, but in the case of a panel that already displays the temperature, it would be wrong to remove it from the panel. We chose a multipurpose display that is sufficient in serving the needs of the product, but is not overly large. A larger display would unnecessarily increase the manufacturing costs and thus the price to the customer. The use of the multipurpose display benefits existing users as they are able to receive any product improvements via a firmware update.
The temperature is displayed in a similar size to that on the original display panel, along with additional system information. For those that prefer seeing the time, the screensaver can optionally function as a wall clock, with precise internet-synced time. Font sizes of other information are chosen based on their relevance to everyday usage patterns, overall making the Geyserwala Connect a cost-effective and user-friendly device.
